Wiesbaden School of Drama

The Wiesbaden School of Drama is a state-recognized private drama school. It was founded in 1952 in Wiesbaden as the Genzmer Acting School by Herta Genzmer, an actress at the Hessian State Theater in Wiesbaden. It has been operating under its new name since 2005.

The school was first located at Langgasse 45 and taught subjects such as role study, speech design, dance, improvisation, pantomime, fencing and singing as well as art history and theater studies.

She was followed by Marie Schroeter-Genzmer (1976), Ernst Brukbauer (1989-1990) and Brigitte Östereicher (1989-2003). Under their direction, the institute received state recognition in 2001. Since 2003, the school has been managed by Dr. Verena Plümer and Martin Plass. After moving to Adolfsallee (1976) and Butterblumenweg (1990/2000), the school has been located in the Georg-Buch-Haus at Wellritzstraße 38 since 2008.

The private institute is run by a non-profit association (Schauspielschule Genzmer e.V.) and is funded by the Cultural Office of the State Capital of Wiesbaden and the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art. The aim is to provide young people with professional training for the profession of stage actor/actress.

The maximum number of students is 30 and they are taught by up to 14 specialist lecturers. The teachers have their own artistic training and many years of stage experience or a corresponding specialist qualification.

In contrast to many other schools, the Wiesbaden School of Drama offers a three-month preliminary course. This enables trainees to gain basic experience, try things out and test their own motivation.

After successfully completing the three-month preliminary course, the training period is usually three years. The curriculum prescribed by the ministry covers the areas of breath/voice/speech, theory, role play and bodywork. In contrast to many other state or private drama schools, the Wiesbadener Schule für Schauspiel teaches role work from the first year of training in duo lessons and from the second year in individual lessons. The curriculum is supplemented by approximately four to five workshops per year, in which the individual areas of training are deepened or further knowledge is imparted.

Two to three theater productions are created each year; the performance venue is the drama school's theater hall.
