Dormann owned a large bricklaying business and was involved in the construction of numerous ecclesiastical and public buildings. These include the English Church(Church of St. Augustine of Canterbury), the Marktkirche, Bergkirche and Maria Hilf Kirche, the Kaiser-Wilhelms-Heilanstalt, the Vorschussverein building, the Wiesbaden Casino-Gesellschaft building and the St. Josefs-Hospital.

For decades, Dormann was a member of the Catholic church council and played a major role in Catholic club life in Wiesbaden. He was also active in the city council and, as a city councillor, had great influence in commercial matters.
