Roth was transferred from Baden service as a captain to the Nassau general staff in 1840 and was tutor to Prince Nicolas(Nikolaus zu Nassau) of Nassau until 1849.

In 1850, Roth became director of the military school (Kadettenanstalt) as a major and, from 1855, commander of the 1st Nassau Infantry Regiment as a colonel. In 1866 Roth, now a general, was commander of the Nassau troops that took part in the campaign against Prussia on the Austrian side. For reasons as yet unknown, Roth left the Nassau troops and fled to Switzerland. It is remarkable that Roth, a non-nobleman and non-Nassau native, was able to become prince-educator.
