Press release of the state capital Wiesbaden

Drinking water chlorination during maintenance work

Due to upcoming maintenance and repair work on the historic Münzberg tunnel, a small amount of chlorine will be added to the drinking water in parts of the Wiesbaden supply area of ESWE Versorgung for disinfection. The measure will begin on Monday, April 13, and is expected to run until the end of the month.

Chlorination is being used as an additional hygiene measure during the maintenance and repair work scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, through Sunday, April 19. The dosage is being administered in accordance with the requirements of the Drinking Water Ordinance and in consultation with the Wiesbaden Public Health Department.

During this period, consumers may occasionally notice a slight chlorine odor or taste in the drinking water. This poses no health risks: The drinking water continues to fully comply with the strict requirements of the Drinking Water Ordinance and can be used without restriction as usual—for example, for drinking, cooking, bathing, showering, and washing.

During regular operation of the Münzbergstollen, UV disinfection has been used in water treatment since 2019. Previously, the spring water from the Münzbergstollen had been disinfected with chlorine for many years. The switch to UV light was made deliberately with consumers in mind, to provide water that is as unaltered as possible in terms of taste and smell.

Chlorination in connection with maintenance work is therefore only temporary and will be discontinued once the work is completed.

The Münzberg Tunnel is a significant part of Wiesbaden’s historic water infrastructure and is already over 100 years old. Regular maintenance and repair work helps preserve this facility for the long term and ensure its reliable operation in the future.

The Platter Straße water treatment plant, which is fed by the Münzbergstollen, supplies the following neighborhoods and streets, which will therefore be affected by chlorination starting Monday, April 13: Sonnenberg (including the areas/streets Danziger Straße, Hirtenstraße, Ostpreußenstraße, Goldsteintal) and Nordost (including the areas Eigenheim, Neroberg, Nerotal, Platter Straße, Dambachtal, Lahnstraße).

In addition, the following districts/areas and streets are partially supplied with water from the Münzbergstollen: Bierstadt, Kloppenheim, Igstadt, Heßloch, Nordenstadt (upper zone), Erbenheim (Hochfeld), northern Emil-Krag-Straße, Hainerberg, western Moltkering, Aukamm, Bingertstraße, Liebenaustraße, Heidestock settlement, An den Fichten settlement.

Water supply will remain fully guaranteed throughout the entire area.
