Ground-breaking ceremony for new neighborhood square in the Komponistenviertel

On Tuesday, April 7, the construction of a new neighborhood square at the intersection of Abeggstraße and Schumannstraße in the Komponistenviertel began with a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony. The square will improve the quality of life in the district and become an attractive meeting place. Completion is scheduled for the end of June 2026.

“Spaces like this create opportunities for people of all generations to come together and strengthen the neighborhood community. That is why we want to design this square so that it is easily accessible and equally suitable for people of all ages,” said Mayor Christiane Hinninger.

The construction of the neighborhood square is being financially supported by the “Hans + Irene Jade” Foundation, which is covering roughly half of the total costs of 336,000 euros with a donation of 171,000 euros. “Without this generous support, the project would not have been possible in this form,” says Hinninger.

The Komponistenviertel is characterized by historic villas and spacious gardens, as well as its location amidst significant green spaces. However, within the neighborhood, there have been a lack of continuous green connections and a shortage of recreational and play areas close to home. The plan is to create a versatile space with play, recreational, and physical activity options for different age groups. A wooden sculpture invites children to play, climb, and linger.

The central plaza area also offers space for relaxation and shared activities, such as a game of boules. Seating, natural stone blocks, new trees, and a permanently installed parasol enhance the quality of the space. The concept is complemented by climate-adapted shrub plantings and species-rich flower meadows.

The new neighborhood square will be another building block on the path to a continuous green corridor in the Komponistenviertel. An important first step was already taken in September 2024 with the opening of a new playground at Hohenloheplatz.

The project is part of the long-term implementation of a development plan aimed at establishing a high-quality, continuous green infrastructure in the Komponistenviertel. The surrounding schools and kindergartens will also benefit from the new open space, which offers additional opportunities for recreation, physical activity, and social interaction.

Planning and implementation are being handled by the Parks Department in collaboration with a landscaping company.
