City receives 800,000 euros for the renovation of the Helmut Schön Sports Park

The Budget Committee of the German Bundestag has decided to provide the state capital of Wiesbaden with 800,000 euros from the federal funding program for the "Renovation of municipal sports facilities" for the "Renovation of the Helmut Schön Sports Park" project.

Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende is pleased with the funding: “This is good news from Berlin—the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag has decided on the allocation of the so-called ‘sports billion.’ And Wiesbaden is benefiting from it: 800,000 euros will go toward renovating the running tracks and synthetic surfaces at Helmut-Schön-Sportpark, which is great news. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Dr. Stefan Korbach, the Member of the Bundestag from Wiesbaden, for his strong advocacy on this issue.”

Funds for replacing the synthetic surfaces at the Helmut-Schön-Sportpark are already allocated in the 2026 budget. With the funding now announced, the project may be fully implemented. The state capital of Wiesbaden had applied for the so-called “Sports Billion” with two additional projects. One involves planning funds for the construction of a new functional building between the artificial turf field and the natural grass field, featuring changing rooms, showers, restrooms, a referee’s room, storage, technical facilities, and a sales area for clubs (not a clubhouse), also at the Helmut-Schön-Sportpark; the other involves planning funds for the comprehensive renovation of the Wilhelm-Leuschner-Schule sports hall. Neither of these measures was approved.

At its meeting, the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag approved funding for a total of 314 sports facilities using funds from the federal program “Renovation of Municipal Sports Facilities.” A total of 333 million euros is available for this funding round in the economic plan of the Special Fund for Infrastructure and Climate Neutrality. “With 3,684 applications and a total volume of 7.5 billion euros, the funding program is oversubscribed by a factor of 23. This makes it all the more gratifying that Wiesbaden was selected with a project,” the mayor concluded.
