Redesign of the entrance at the Kostheim tower
The state capital of Wiesbaden has been part of the RhineMain Regional Park since 2007. The regional park makes an important contribution to local recreation in the region. Its signposted route network already connects more than 300 adventure points and constantly opens up new perspectives on a landscape full of exciting contrasts.
The Parks and Recreation Department of the State Capital of Wiesbaden has now begun construction work on the redesign of the entrance area at the Kostheimer Tower. The area around the observation tower is being developed into a recreational space along the Main River and a destination within the Rhine-Main Regional Park.
“With the redesign of the entrance area at the Kostheim Tower, we are specifically enhancing the surroundings of this special location on the Main River. The area will be more accessible in the future, the river will be more vividly experienced, and the quality of this site within the Regional Park will be further strengthened,” says Christiane Hinninger, Commissioner for Parks and Green Spaces.
With the “Observation Tower at the Main Harbor,” the first visitor attraction in the Wiesbaden section of the Regional Park was inaugurated in Kostheim in 2011. The tower offers a unique view over Kostheim, the Main locks, and far into the Rheingau.
The area around the observation tower is intended to better fulfill its role as a meeting point for two regional park routes in the future. The goal of the redesign is to make the Main River more visible through new sightlines, create seating areas for visitors to linger, and make the on-site path layout clearer and safer.
The plan calls for a redesigned plaza area and terraced landscaping. This will create recreational spaces with benches, loungers, and wooden platforms. Additionally, a wooden climbing structure will be installed as a play feature. With the planting of nine new trees, willow shrubs, and the creation of meadow areas, the design blends harmoniously into the adjacent Flößerpark.
The total cost of the project amounts to approximately 610,000 euros. Regionalpark Ballungsraum RheinMain GmbH is funding the project with 240,000 euros.
Construction is scheduled to be completed in June.
