Colorful program at the Wiesbaden Weeks of Biodiversity
The third "Wiesbaden Weeks of Biodiversity" (WieWoBiodiv) will take place from Monday, May 18, to Sunday, June 14.
The series of events invites residents to rediscover nature right on their doorstep and get actively involved. “Biodiversity is an indispensable foundation of our lives and our quality of life. Preserving and protecting it is a task to which we must dedicate ourselves wholeheartedly,” emphasizes Mayor and Head of the Environmental Department Christiane Hinninger.
In collaboration with the Environmental Office, numerous associations, initiatives, and dedicated individuals are organizing a diverse program. More than 60 events—including excursions, exhibitions, lectures, and hands-on activities—offer a wide range of opportunities to discover nature in and around Wiesbaden. The focus is on native plants, animals, and habitats, as well as practical tips on how everyone can contribute to the protection of nature and biodiversity.
After all, protecting biodiversity starts with us. Even small steps, such as planting native species or consciously noticing and appreciating nature in everyday life, can make a big difference. WieWoBiodiv showcases gems of local nature and presents ways to preserve and promote biodiversity. “The strong commitment to protecting biodiversity locally is impressive and shows that the preservation of biodiversity is a genuine concern for many citizens,” said Hinninger.
The event series takes place annually on the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22. It commemorates the signing of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro.
Biological diversity, also known as biodiversity, is the foundation of stable ecosystems and thus a central basis of life for humans. Scientists view the ongoing decline in biodiversity as one of the greatest challenges for the future of humanity. The Wiesbaden Weeks of Biological Diversity aim to raise awareness of the issue and provide impetus for greater engagement in nature conservation.
