Helga Schubert presents her book "Luft zum Leben" (Air for Life)
Stories, poems, thoughts - Helga Schubert has compiled a walk through seven decades of her own work in "Luft zum Leben" (Air for Life), documenting, among other things, everyday life in the GDR.
On Wednesday, May 6, she will present her book at 7:30 p.m. at the Literaturhaus Villa Clementine, Frankfurter Straße 1, and will be in conversation with journalist Ariane Binder (3sat). The event is organized by the Literaturhaus Villa Clementine/Wiesbaden Cultural Office. Further information is available at www.wiesbaden.de/literaturhaus (opens in a new tab).
Helga Schubert was invited to the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize in 1980, but was denied permission to leave the country. In 2020, at the age of 80, she was invited again and went on to win the competition. The texts in “Luft zum Leben” deal not only with Germany’s past but also examine current conditions, women’s lives, and transitions in both personal biographies and society. In doing so, Helga Schubert moves between past and present, linking the personal and the political, and describes a longing for freedom that must never be abandoned.
Tickets are available in advance for 12 euros, reduced rate 9 euros, plus a booking fee, at the Wiesbaden Tourist Information Office, Marktplatz 1, phone (0611) 1729930; online via the Literaturhaus website. At the box office on the night of the event, admission is 15 euros, reduced rate 11 euros.
