Fritz Bauer was one of the most prominent figures in the legal reckoning with Nazi crimes. In particular, his efforts to bring about the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials remain of outstanding significance to this day. The dedication ceremony was deliberately held on September 1, Anti-War Day. 

Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende said: “With the Fritz Bauer Memorial, we are creating a visible place of remembrance right in the heart of our city. Fritz Bauer stands for the conviction that a democratic society must confront its past and take responsibility.” 

Mayor Christiane Hinninger said: “Memorial sites have the greatest impact precisely when they are part of our everyday lives. People walk past them, perhaps pause, read a name or some information, and begin to engage with the history behind it. That is exactly what we hope for here as well.” 

The information sign that has now been unveiled is a temporary solution. As part of the planned redesign of Kranzplatz next year, a permanent memorial stele will be erected and integrated into the overall design of the site.
