The three-story, C-shaped new building, featuring 25 classrooms, a cafeteria, and ancillary rooms, provides a sustainable expansion of the Martin Niemöller School at 47 Bierstadter Straße. The construction became necessary after the school was converted from an upper-level high school to a full-fledged G9 high school in 2014–2015 and required additional capacity. With a gross floor area of approximately 5,350 square meters and an investment cost of 34 million euros, the expansion provides the physical space required for long-term operation as a full-time high school.

The oral Abitur exams were held in the new building as early as the end of May 2026, and regular classes have been held there since the end of June. The previous temporary container facility was dismantled after the students moved in.

Construction began in April 2023 with earthwork and shoring. In particular, the excavation pit—up to 11 meters deep in water-sensitive clay soil—posed a major challenge. Heavy rainfall and slope failures caused delays, which were offset by accelerated interior finishing work and enhanced coordination among the various trades.

Sustainability considerations played a central role throughout the planning phase: The ventilation system was modified to reduce drinking water consumption, and a more sustainable brick or clinker facade was installed instead of fiber-reinforced concrete slabs. In consultation with the Environmental Protection Agency, paths and playground equipment were designed to ensure that existing trees remain protected.

Crucial to the project’s success was the close collaboration between the school district, school administration, WiBau, the Building Authority, the Sports Authority, as well as the planning firms and contractors. Additional user requests—including modifications to the kitchen and the installation of a drinking water dispenser—were also taken into account. The lighting for the new parking lot was adapted in collaboration with the Urania Astronomical Society to ensure that safety and astronomical observations are compatible.

The redesign of the outdoor and sports facilities will continue through the end of fall 2026 and includes barrier-free terracing as well as the revitalization of the former container area.
