By closing earlier, the Fasanerie is taking into account both the welfare of its animals and the safety of its employees. The high temperatures place a considerable strain on both people and animals. By closing early, the animals can retreat undisturbed to the shaded areas of their enclosures or to their cool stables during the hottest hours of the day. At the same time, this relieves the burden on the staff who care for the animals’ well-being on a daily basis amid these extreme weather conditions.

“The well-being of our animals is our top priority. Given the forecasted temperatures, we want to give them the peace and quiet they need so they can retreat to their sheltered refuges. At the same time, it is important to us to protect our employees from the extraordinary strain caused by the heat,” says Mayor Christiane Hinninger.

Residents should also take the high temperatures seriously. It is recommended to schedule physical activities for the cooler morning and evening hours whenever possible, to drink plenty of fluids, and to avoid direct sunlight during the midday and afternoon hours. Once the heat wave is over, the Fasanerie will resume its regular summer hours, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
