Experience Bats—A Nighttime Discovery Tour
The City Environmental Office, in collaboration with the Nature Conservation Center, is offering a bat-watching excursion on Friday, August 28, at 7:00 p.m., at the former Kalkofen quarry in Erbenheim.
Participants will have the rare opportunity to explore an important winter roost for bats. Using a bat detector, the calls of these nocturnal insect hunters will become audible to the human ear. Bat expert Olaf Godmann will share interesting facts about the lifestyle of native bats, their importance to the ecosystem, and the threats facing these fascinating animals as well as efforts to protect them.
The excursion takes place as part of International Bat Night, which has been celebrated on the last weekend of August for nearly 30 years. Events around the world raise awareness of bat diversity and promote their protection and the conservation of their habitats.
Participation is free and limited to 30 people. Registration is required at www.wiesbaden.de/bat-night (opens in a new tab). The excursion lasts about two and a half hours and is suitable for children ages ten and up.
