As in the previous year, one of the main focuses of law enforcement was the morning drop-off rush. So-called “parent taxis”—which double-park, make U-turns on narrow streets, or ignore no-stopping zones—regularly create confusing and dangerous situations for students. Failure to use seat belts and the lack of required booster seats are also frequent reasons for warnings, reprimands, or educational discussions.

“Our main goal with these campaigns has always been—and continues to be—to engage with parents,” explains Peter Erkel, chief of the city police. “Many dangerous situations arise from rushing and carelessness. Our on-site conversations have shown that most parents are very understanding, and often even small changes in behavior—such as letting children out on the sidewalk side—significantly increase safety.”

The city police deliberately focused on visibility and direct dialogue, but also took firm action in cases of serious violations. In addition to raising awareness through community discussions, speed checks are also a key component of the measures.

Since school route safety is an ongoing priority, the city police are continuing their checks and prevention campaigns. Even schools where campaigns or checks have already been conducted will not automatically fall out of the city police’s focus this year. As one example showed, unfortunately, following a campaign, three follow-up checks revealed another 16 violations that had to be identified and penalized. Especially in the coming weeks, police officers will once again have an increased presence in the mornings outside schools.

The city police ask all road users and parents to be considerate, to observe no-stopping zones, and to comply with traffic regulations in the immediate vicinity of schools to ensure that the youngest students have a safe commute to school.
