Environmental Agency Kicks Off the New Season with Mushroom Field Trips
Which mushrooms should you put in your basket, and which ones are best left in the woods? To celebrate mushroom season, the City Environmental Protection Agency is offering mushroom-hunting excursions on the first two weekends in September. On Saturday, September 5, and Sunday, September 6, as well as on Saturday, September 12, and Sunday, September 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day, participants will head into the Wiesbaden forests under the expert guidance of Franz Heller.
Participants will learn about native mushroom species and discover what is important when collecting and safely identifying them.
A three-day identification course starting October 10 will provide more in-depth knowledge. A few spots are still available. Franz Heller will share his expert knowledge of native mushroom species, how to identify them, and proper collection techniques. The event also focuses on the important role of mushrooms in the forest ecosystem, as well as nature conservation and species protection. After all, mushrooms are much more than just sought-after edible varieties: they fulfill important functions in the natural balance and are closely connected to trees and other plants.
Starting in September, the Environmental Office will also offer free mushroom consultations. Every Monday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., anyone interested can have their self-collected mushrooms expertly identified at the Umweltladen, Luisenstraße 19. No registration is required.
