Lecture: “Christian Dell: A Teacher in the Context of Weimar Modernism”

On Tuesday, August 25, at 6 p.m., the City Museum on the Market Square invites you to a lecture by Dr. Frank Werner titled “Christian Dell: A Teacher in the Context of Weimar Modernism” at the WerkRaum, Langgasse 5-9. Admission is free.

The Weimar Republic was a period of profound social and artistic upheaval. New concepts of functionality and industrial design fundamentally challenged traditional notions of arts and crafts. At the Bauhaus in Weimar and later in Frankfurt, Christian Dell taught at two centers of design innovation. At the same time, he emerged as a defining figure of Weimar Modernism.

The speaker, Dr. Frank Werner, is the recipient of the 2025 ART Curator’s Award for the exhibition “Forms of Adaptation” at the Grassi Museum of Applied Arts in Leipzig. In his lecture, he will examine Christian Dell’s work as head of the metal workshop at the State Bauhaus in Weimar and contextualize his teaching within the developments of Weimar Modernism.

The lecture will take place as part of the accompanying program for the special exhibition “Christian Dell—From the Silver Jug to Goldgasse” at WerkRaum Wiesbaden, which the City Museum is using as an external venue as part of the “Glass Museum” initiative.
