Lecture at the Werkraum: On the Life and Death of Duchess Pauline of Nassau
On Thursday, August 13, the Stadtmuseum am Markt invites you to a lecture by Brigitte Streich at the Gläserne Museum in the Werkraum, Langgasse 5–9, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. In a talk titled “The Princess Dies: On the Life and Death of Duchess Pauline of Nassau (1810–1856),” the former director of the City Archives traces the life of an extraordinary woman.
Duchess Pauline of Nassau, who by birth was entitled to the title “Royal Highness” and thus ranked higher than her husband in the order of precedence, left a variety of traces in the city. The Paulinen-Stift bears her name, as does Paulinenstraße. Her residence, the Paulinenschlösschen—named after her—no longer exists today. But what exactly do we know about this historical figure? What family did she come from, and what were her living conditions like? And why did she die at the age of only 46? These and other questions will be answered in the lecture. The event marks the 150th anniversary of the duchess’s death.
