Fair Trade focuses on the living and working conditions of the people who produce goods. It advocates for fairer trade relations, fair wages, and social and environmental standards. At the same time, it raises awareness about where products come from and under what conditions they are produced. 

“We are very pleased that Wiesbaden remains a Fairtrade Town,” says Mayor Christiane Hinninger. “This renewed certification recognizes the long-standing commitment of many people in our city. My heartfelt thanks go to the Fairtrade steering group and all our partners from business, education, churches, associations, politics, government, and civil society. Together, they ensure that fair trade remains visible and vibrant in Wiesbaden.” 

The designation is based on specific criteria. These include support from the local government and an active steering group, as well as an adequate selection of Fairtrade products available in retail stores and restaurants. Schools, churches, clubs, and other institutions are also taking up the cause, using Fairtrade products and educating the public about the realities of global trade. 

In Wiesbaden, the selection ranges from coffee, tea, bananas, and chocolate to textiles, jewelry, and cut flowers. Fair trade products can thus be found in many areas of city life: while shopping, in cafés and cafeterias, in educational institutions, businesses, and clubs. 

The Fairtrade Steering Group coordinates this commitment, connects the participants, and develops informational resources and joint initiatives. This keeps the issue front and center in the city’s community and encourages additional businesses, institutions, and initiatives to get involved. With this successful recertification, Wiesbaden is continuing this commitment and contributing to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals at the local level.
