Fiber-optic expansion in Wiesbaden continues
With a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony at Kerbeplatz in Dotzheim, the state capital of Wiesbaden and OXG Glasfaser GmbH today signaled their commitment to the continued expansion of the fiber-optic network in Wiesbaden. This brings the city closer to its goal of providing high-performance digital infrastructure citywide.
Mayor and Head of the Economic Affairs Department Christiane Hinninger: “In Wiesbaden, several telecommunications companies are expanding the network so that all residents and businesses can have access to fiber-optic connections. The commitment of these companies shows that Wiesbaden is an attractive location for them. Fast and reliable internet is more important today than ever—for families, businesses, schools, and public administration alike. Expanding the fiber-optic network is a crucial step toward achieving this.”
The cooperation agreement between the city administration and the company OXG was signed at the beginning of the year. OXG has announced plans to connect approximately 15,000 addresses and around 70,000 households in Wiesbaden to fiber-optic service. This will primarily take place in the western districts. At the same time, other telecommunications companies are driving expansion in other city districts. Vodafone/Meridiam Glasfaser is currently expanding networks in the eastern suburbs of Auringen, Breckenheim, Delkenheim, Erbenheim, Heßloch, Igstadt, Medenbach, Naurod, and Nordenstadt. Since 2025, Deutsche Telekom has been gradually connecting areas of the city center and is planning further expansion areas. The municipal company WiTCOM GmbH has already established comprehensive fiber-optic infrastructure in all of Wiesbaden’s industrial parks and offers high-performance connections for businesses there.
Numerous households in Wiesbaden’s neighborhoods, as well as businesses in the commercial districts, are already benefiting from fiber-optic connections. The state capital’s goal is to provide all citizens and businesses with access to a modern fiber-optic infrastructure. According to the Federal Network Agency’s Gigabit Land Registry, approximately 25 percent of private households in Wiesbaden are currently served by FTTH (Fiber to the Home) connections with speeds exceeding 1,000 megabits per second.
To date, fiber-optic expansion in Wiesbaden has been carried out exclusively on a self-financing basis. This means that telecommunications companies are investing in the expansion without financial support from the public sector. The city administration is actively supporting this process, which includes, for example, the expedited processing of permit applications. The state capital does not provide fiber-optic connections itself and does not endorse any particular company.
