Wiesbaden Invests in Schools: Projects During Summer Break

This summer, the state capital of Wiesbaden is once again taking advantage of the school break to move forward with construction, renovation, and modernization projects at numerous school sites.

Dr. Hendrik Schmehl, Head of the School Department, says: “We are using the time when classes are not in session to make as much progress as possible on construction projects at Wiesbaden’s schools.”

The range of numerous individual projects to be carried out during the 2026 summer break at elementary schools, secondary schools, vocational schools, and special education schools extends from new expansion buildings and fire safety upgrades to measures for all-day care. Most of the work will be completed before the start of the school year, though a few larger construction projects will continue beyond the summer break.

“Good education requires good buildings. We are therefore consistently investing in Wiesbaden’s school system—in new capacity for a growing city as well as in the maintenance and modernization of existing facilities. The summer break is the most important time of year for this, because much of the work is difficult or impossible to carry out while schools are in session,” explains Dr. Hendrik Schmehl, head of the Department of Education.

One of the main focuses is on structural fire safety as well as roof, facade, and floor renovations, including at the Gutenberg School, the Friedrich-von-Bodelschwingh School, the Wilhelm-Leuschner School, the Pestalozzi School, and the Friedrich-von-Schiller School.

Ensuring the availability of all-day programs is a priority at the Adolf-Reichwein School, the Diesterweg School, the Justus-von-Liebig School, the Robert-Schumann School, the Sauerland Elementary School, the Sophie-and-Hans-Scholl School, the Goethe School, the Alexej-von-Jawlensky School, the Helen-Keller School, and the Albrecht-Dürer School: Here, kitchens, convection ovens, food service areas, and cafeteria furnishings are being upgraded or replaced.

Several major construction projects will continue over the summer or reach important milestones, such as the new construction of the Wettiner Straße Elementary School, the construction phase for Building Section E at the Elisabeth Selbert School, and the renovations at the Bertha von Suttner School, the Hebbel School, and the Martin-Niemöller School.

The city’s school board compiles and coordinates an overview of construction projects annually before the summer break to minimize disruptions to school operations during the current school year.
