"Wiesbaden Engagiert!" Action Week: 144 Projects Completed
The “Wiesbaden Engagiert!” action week came to a close with 144 projects. More than 1,500 people from companies, government agencies, clubs, and organizations volunteered during the action week to support social, environmental, and charitable initiatives in Wiesbaden. A total of 117 clubs and organizations, as well as 102 companies, government agencies, and associations, participated.
“I am very grateful for such a high level of commitment in Wiesbaden. It takes a very special kind of energy for so many people to come together like this in just one week,” said Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende at the conclusion of the campaign week. As patron of the event, he thanked everyone involved who contributed their time, knowledge, and energy. Whether trainees, project managers, social workers, electricians, or department heads: The action week demonstrated just how diverse volunteerism is in Wiesbaden.
Despite rainy weather at the start and hot temperatures later on, the volunteers, for example, decorated schoolyards with colorful containers or painted classrooms to create a better learning environment. Older adults and people with disabilities enjoyed activities such as a guided excursion on the Rhine or a summer festival. For homeless people, the outdoor area of a temporary shelter was beautified. The volunteers also worked tirelessly on behalf of the women’s shelter and youth services. Cleanup efforts benefited the Neroberg and the banks of the Rhine in Biebrich. Scattered project days will continue through October—some were postponed due to high temperatures or can only take place now to protect nesting birds.
Dr. Patricia Becher, Head of Social Affairs, visited various sites to see the efforts firsthand, including the Brückenschule, where the Wiesbaden Economic Forum was involved. “I met some truly remarkable people who have dedicated themselves to helping those in need with great joy and motivation,” said Dr. Becher. “Every project helps social service organizations, broadens horizons, and fosters better community spirit.”
The Action Week is a pillar of the “Wiesbaden Engagiert!” strategy of the Office for Social Work. The goal is to promote collaboration between businesses and nonprofit organizations and to strengthen social engagement in a sustainable way. The Action Week is the largest event of its kind in Europe. Further information is available at aktionswoche-wiesbaden-engagiert.de (opens in a new tab).
