“You Belong”: Action Week Against Loneliness

From Monday, June 22, through Friday, June 26, the city of Wiesbaden will participate in the nationwide Action Week Against Loneliness. Under the motto “You Belong,” the Department of Senior Services at the Office of Social Work, together with numerous partners, invites people of all ages to participate in a diverse program of events. The goal is to encourage social interaction, strengthen community, and raise public awareness of the issue of loneliness.

Loneliness is not a marginal phenomenon. It affects people in all stages and circumstances of life—regardless of age or place of residence. With this action week, the state capital of Wiesbaden is sending a clear message in support of greater community spirit. All activities are deliberately designed to be easily accessible and are available free of charge or for a small fee. The week kicks off on Monday, June 22, at 4 p.m. with a flash mob on Schlossplatz. Dr. Patricia Becher, Commissioner for Social Affairs, will welcome the participants. She emphasizes: “Loneliness can affect people of all ages. This makes places and opportunities that facilitate encounters and strengthen community all the more important. With this action week, we want to bring people together, raise awareness of existing programs, and encourage people to make new connections.”

Over the following days, the program will include breakfast gatherings in the city’s neighborhoods, an intergenerational brunch, a guided tour of the Fasanerie, game afternoons, a storytelling café, and a “thinking café” with bingo. A walk through the Biebrich Castle Park with coffee and cake at the Martin Hörner Center, as well as a “Community Market,” round out the program. The “Community Marketplace” at the Galatea Park in Biebrich invites visitors to learn about local initiatives and support services offered by civil society.

The Action Week is supported by a broad network of welfare associations, social organizations, and other stakeholders in Wiesbaden’s civic society. These include, among others, the Diakonie, the Workers’ Welfare Association (AWO), the Malteser, the Johanniter, the Hospice Association, and the Alzheimer’s Association.

The Wiesbaden Action Week is part of a nationwide initiative by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth, which takes place under the motto “Making a Difference Together” and calls on people to foster connections and raise awareness about loneliness.
