Press release of the state capital Wiesbaden

Heat and Drought: Water Withdrawal from Water Bodies Prohibited

Due to the ongoing drought, the withdrawal of water from streams, ponds, and lakes within the city limits of Wiesbaden is generally prohibited starting Thursday, July 2. A corresponding general order will be published on Wednesday, July 1. The measure is intended to protect water bodies from further ecological damage. Violations of the ban may be punishable by fines of up to 100,000 euros.

Water levels in numerous streams in Wiesbaden are currently well below the typical seasonal levels. The Wäschbach, Kesselbach, and Wellritzbach are particularly affected by the ongoing drought. As a result, the city is once again issuing a general order to prevent further ecological damage. Similar measures were already necessary during the dry years of 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2023. In the past two summers, this was not necessary due to average precipitation levels.

The ban also applies to so-called riparian property owners whose land borders directly on bodies of water. Exceptions continue to apply within the scope of public use. For example, watering livestock is permitted, but drawing water with hand-held containers is not. Withdrawing water from the Rhine and Main rivers using pumps remains generally permitted, but must be reported in advance to the Lower Water Authority. For existing water withdrawal rights, the previous conditions remain unchanged. Permit holders are asked to use water sparingly and to comply with the applicable withdrawal restrictions.

In justified individual cases, the Lower Water Authority may grant exceptions upon request. Questions regarding the general ruling will be answered by the Lower Water Authority of the State Capital of Wiesbaden after the general ruling is published at (0611) 313713 or by email at wasserbehoerdewiesbadende.
