Mayor and Head of the Environment Department Christiane Hinninger explains: “Located in one of the hottest spots in the city center, the ‘Klima-Kiste’ is a place where you can really feel the impact of climate adaptation and see how greenery, shade, and water can improve the urban climate.”

The 35-square-meter temporary installation is planted with vegetation that can withstand heat and drought. It features seating, a sunshade, and a misting system to cool visitors. In addition, there are four information boards that explain key aspects of climate adaptation. An accompanying survey invites visitors to share their impressions and offer suggestions. Last year at Kochbrunnenplatz, the “Klima-Kiste” attracted around 40,000 visitors. 

While the “Klima-Kiste” was in storage over the winter, the plants continued to grow and now make the structure even more vibrant. The display features native perennials, shrubs, flowers, and trees that are particularly heat-tolerant. They create a pleasant microclimate, add splashes of color, and provide food for insects. To help visitors navigate the display, all plants are labeled this year.

The “Klima-Kiste” is a joint project of City Management and the Environmental Agency. The box was planted free of charge by the Association of Wiesbaden Cemetery Gardeners, which also handles its maintenance. It is supported in this effort by the Trust Agency for Permanent Grave Maintenance in Hesse-Thuringia and the Horticultural Association of Baden-Württemberg-Hesse.

The “Climate Box” will be on display at Luisenplatz until the end of August and is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
