Online Voting: Elsässer Park Nominated for the “Blue Compass” Award
Elsässer Park in Wiesbaden has been nominated for Germany’s highest government award for climate adaptation projects, the “Blue Compass.” The Federal Ministry for the Environment presents the award to cities, companies, and organizations whose projects serve as models for addressing the consequences of climate change.
Online voting for the “Blauer Kompass” Community Award is currently underway. Residents can still vote for Elsässer Park at www.umweltbundesamt.de/form/voting-blauer-kompass (opens in a new tab) until Tuesday, June 23, at 11:59 p.m. Each person may vote once using their email address.
Mayor and Head of the Environment Department Christiane Hinninger is asking the residents of Wiesbaden to vote online for their new park: “This nomination is a great recognition of a project that demonstrates how climate adaptation can be implemented in a very concrete way in the city. Elsässer Park creates much-needed green space, improves the microclimate, and makes Wiesbaden more resilient to heat and heavy rain.”
The projects honored by the “Blue Compass” will each receive prize money of 25,000 euros. The award ceremony will take place on September 17, 2026, in Berlin.
A new city park is currently being developed on the site of the former Elsässer Platz in Wiesbaden’s densely built-up Westend district. Here, a previously paved parking lot is being transformed into a climate-adapted open space featuring new green areas, climate-resilient trees, rainwater management, and a high quality of life for visitors.
