City honors sporting achievements and voluntary commitment

The 2026 Sports Awards Ceremony was held in the inner courtyard of the town hall on Tuesday evening, June 9. A total of 186 deserving citizens and athletes were recognized and honoured for their special achievements over the past year.

“Every year, the Sports Awards Ceremony demonstrates just how diverse and vibrant sports are in Wiesbaden. It brings people together, strengthens our sense of community, and makes an important contribution to health, integration, and community spirit. As mayor and head of the sports department, I am particularly pleased to honor 186 citizens and athletes who, through their achievements and dedication, serve as role models for our city,” said Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende.

Together with Thomas Schwarze, Deputy Chair of the City Council, the Mayor honored three deserving citizens at the start of the event with the State Capital of Wiesbaden Sports Medal for outstanding service to sports.

Günter Jung of the Waldstraße Gymnastics Club has been active as a coach in the club since 1988. Under his leadership, a small running group developed into a successful track and field department whose athletes regularly achieve top placements at regional and state championships and have been represented in the German Track and Field Association’s rankings for more than 20 years. Jung creates training plans, handles competition registrations, organizes travel, and accompanies the athletes during training and at competitions. In addition, he has been planning and leading a youth training camp during the Easter break for many years. Jung is also a successful athlete himself: he has been a multiple Hesse and German champion in the 5,000-meter, 10,000-meter, half-marathon, and marathon events.

Jürgen Mauer of the Rambach Gymnastics and Sports Club has been a member of the club since 1990 and has been involved in various areas of sports for decades. From 2011 to 2023, he headed the gymnastics department and was named an honorary member of the club in 2023. In addition, he was active as a handball referee for many years. In track and field, Mauer has served as a judge since 1998 and has additionally served as chairman since 2015. He is also involved in the Combined Events Committee of the Hessian Gymnastics Association, serving, among other roles, as a training director for judges. He also holds leadership roles with the German Sports Badge program: He has been an examiner since 2011, chairman since 2016, and Sports Badge representative for the Wiesbaden Sports District. Since 2025, he has served as vice-chairman of the Sports District.

Jörg Wintermeyer of Spielvereinigung Sonnenberg has been a member of the club since 1972. He initially played for the team, later taking on the role of deputy youth director and serving as vice president for many years. His name is particularly closely associated with the Wiesbaden Liliencup. Since 2013, Wintermeyer has been responsible for the soccer tournament and has played a key role in its development. In addition, he is involved with Wiesbadener Sportförderung e. V., serving as a board member and, since 2023, as vice president. There, he contributes to projects such as the 25-hour run.

In subsequent award ceremonies, active athletes were honored. Twenty-two special honors were awarded, along with seven gold sports medals, seven silver sports medals, and eight bronze sports medals. Additionally, 120 young people and 19 senior citizens were honored. The awards reflect the breadth of sports in Wiesbaden—including achievements in volleyball, swimming, judo, cheerleading, track and field, taekwondo, canoe racing, shooting, bobsledding, figure skating, table tennis, trampoline gymnastics, and sport stacking.

“These many successes demonstrate how strong sports are in Wiesbaden—among youth as well as among active athletes and seniors. At the same time, the honorees clearly demonstrate how important reliability, volunteerism, and community engagement are for our clubs. I would like to sincerely thank all the honorees for their dedication and congratulate them on their achievements,” Mende concluded.
