Press release of the state capital Wiesbaden

Reading in the Westend district

For the second time in a row, the reading festival StadtteilLesen took place in Westend at the end of May. Together with local cooperation partners, the education office in the schools department organized the event and put together a varied programme for families, children and young people.

Readings and a picture book theater took place in the Georg-Buch-Saal, the AWO Family Education Center, and the Youth Center—all located on the same floor of the Georg-Buch-Haus. Book exchange stations, mats, and snack bars offering fruit and cake invited visitors to browse and linger. This time, the reading festival did not take place on a Saturday or during the school break, but instead complemented the “Summer of Language Education” program organized by the daycare division of the Office of Social Work on a Friday. In the morning, children from the daycare centers themselves were invited to the reading festival to discover a connection to language and books through stories read aloud. One group even traveled all the way from Gräselberg to Westend.

In the afternoon, older children arrived, including some from the Wellritzhof Children’s Center. In the morning, Svenja Stieglitz enriched the program with her own book, “Die Zebras ohne Streifen.” Dr. Patricia Becher, Head of Social Affairs, also took the time to read a book to the children. In addition to the AWO Family Education Center, KiEZ Westend, and the Youth Center, the City Library with its Velothék, the Adult Education Center (VHS), the “Lies mit mir!” project by the MitInitiative association, and the Pitrimka association supported the preparation and execution of the event.
