Environmental award: Three projects honored for sustainability

The 2026 Environmental Award of the state capital of Wiesbaden was presented on Friday, June 5, International Environment Day, in the large ballroom in the town hall. Mayor and Head of the Environment Department Christiane Hinninger honored three initiatives that are particularly committed to nature and environmental protection in urban society. The prize is endowed with a total of 3,000 euros.

“The Environmental Award demonstrates just how creative, dedicated, and solution-oriented nature conservation and climate protection can be. It is not only an award but also a platform—for ideas, for exchange, and for people seeking partners, support, or funding for their projects. A big thank you to everyone who participated and congratulations to the winners,” said Hinninger.

The jury was impressed by the quality and diversity of the 24 applications submitted by schools, daycare centers, clubs, companies, and private initiatives. In addition to the winners, all other applicants were expressly recognized for their efforts.

The first prize (1,500 euros) went to the “ArtenGarten Wiesbaden Komponistenviertel” project. The initiative promotes biodiversity through the nature-oriented redesign of areas, the planting of native species, and the creation of structurally rich habitats for insects. Particular emphasis was placed on the cost-effective and easily replicable approach using recycled materials, as well as the removal of impervious surfaces and rainwater management for climate protection. Through lectures and guided tours, the project encourages others to follow suit.

Second place (750 euros) went to the daycare project “Thinking with Your Hands.” Here, a child-friendly workbench was set up where children learn to repair and creatively repurpose furniture and play equipment. Instead of buying new items, resources are conserved and waste is avoided. Each year, around a hundred children are actively involved in sustainable processes.

The third prize (750 euros) went to “Eve + Olive” for the “Closing the Loop” concept. The company develops grow-with-you baby clothing made from innovative, single-source cellulose fibers in a closed-loop system. Compared to conventional cotton, production saves up to 95 percent water. The clothing is manufactured in Portugal; the fabrics are recyclable multiple times, biodegradable, and certified according to the Oeko-Tex Standard 100, among other standards.

The Wiesbaden Environmental Award has been presented every two years since 2010 and has established itself as an important platform for promoting sustainable development in the state capital.
