Ten Years Since the Brexit Referendum: Local Ties Endure

Exactly ten years ago, the citizens of the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union; with the conclusion of the transition period, Brexit was finalized. Through the European city network Eurocities, Wiesbaden continues to maintain ties with municipalities in the United Kingdom. These relationships demonstrate that cooperation and exchange can continue even when political paths diverge.

Maral Koohestanian, Director of European Affairs, says: “Political decisions can change the path we take, but the connections between people endure. For me, that is precisely where Europe’s special strength lies. Exchanges between municipalities foster mutual understanding and bring people together across borders. As Director of European Affairs, I will continue to work toward this goal.”

The state capital of Wiesbaden views European cooperation as a shared responsibility for the future. Cities and municipalities play an important role in this by fostering direct exchanges between citizens and making Europe a tangible part of everyday life.
