Invitation to the open consultation hour "Together. Safe. Queer."
As part of the "Queer Summer", the state capital of Wiesbaden, the West Hesse Police Headquarters and VelsPol Hessen e.V. are jointly inviting you to the open consultation hour "Together. Safe. Queer.".
The event will take place for the first time on Wednesday, May 20, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Wiesbaden City Hall, Schlossplatz, Room 018. Members of the LGBT*IQ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer people) are especially invited, as well as anyone who has questions or concerns regarding safety, discrimination, or support for queer people in Wiesbaden.
The event is prompted by a recent survey on experiences of violence and discrimination among LGBT*IQ individuals in Wiesbaden. The results show that members of sexual and gender minorities repeatedly experience discrimination or attacks in public spaces. However, many victims do not report such incidents to the police or other authorities. The city administration and the police see this as a shared call to action.
“Crimes based on sexual or gender identity have no place in our society—the West Hesse Police Headquarters is taking consistent action against them. Our goal is clear: We want to bring more anti-LGBT*IQ crimes to light by being approachable and building trust. Our contact persons are an important link to the community—they build trust and support those affected as equals,” emphasizes Katrin Thaler, Deputy Police Chief of the West Hesse Police Headquarters.
With the “Together. Safe. Queer.” consultation hour, the city and police are consciously positioning themselves as low-threshold points of contact for those affected by anti-queer experiences. Visitors can drop by without prior registration and ask questions, for example on the following topics:
Safety in everyday life: How should I respond to discrimination or violence?
Police support: How do I file a report, and who are my points of contact?
Prevention: What can I do to ensure my own safety?
Local support services: What support options are available in Wiesbaden?
LGBTQIQ contact persons from the West Hesse Police Headquarters, the LGBTQIQ Coordination Office of the State Capital of Wiesbaden, and VelsPol Hessen e.V. – the queer network for police, justice, and customs in Hesse – will be available for discussions. All conversations will be treated confidentially. If desired, concerns can also be followed up on beyond the event.
“Safety is a shared responsibility of the municipality and the police,” emphasize the organizers. “We want to send a clear message: Everyone in Wiesbaden should feel safe and respected—regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.” With “Together. Safe. Queer.,” the city and the police are creating an open space for dialogue, information, and mutual understanding—accessible, approachable, and collaborative.
