Kastel children's parliament meets for the second time
On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, the second meeting of the children's parliament took place in Kastel. Before the meeting began, the young delegates had the opportunity to get to know members of the local council's political groups and exchange ideas with them.
Mayor Christa Gabriel warmly welcomed the children and expressed her delight at the prospect of future collaboration with the Children’s Parliament. When she asked why the children had decided to run for office, the delegates replied unanimously: “We want to have a say.” Afterward, Mr. Gündüz, deputy head of the local administration, gave the children a tour of the local administration’s offices. The Children’s Parliament’s new logo was also unveiled; it will represent all of the body’s future activities and projects.
The chair of the Children’s Parliament, Nina van den Berg, then opened the meeting. To start, the children brainstormed ideas for the Children’s Parliament’s action day on Friday, June 5, which will take place as part of the play street event in Kastel. The action day is part of “Auf die Plätze los” and is included in the program of the World Design Capital Region Frankfurt/RheinMain 2026.
The meeting focused on the first proposals from the district’s three elementary schools as well as from the Children’s and Youth Center at the Reduit. With creative poster presentations, the children enthusiastically promoted their ideas. The Krautgartenschule advocated for paving the route from the school to the cafeteria. Students at the Gustav-Stresemann-Schule would like to see a public drinking fountain on the banks of the Rhine. Representatives from the Bertha-von-Suttner-Schule are calling for a 30 km/h zone around the school to improve traffic safety. The proposals from the Children’s and Youth Center at the Reduit also received strong support: affordable ice cream for children during the summer months, as well as additional playground equipment on the Messerschmitt grounds. All submitted proposals were approved by a majority vote and will now be forwarded to the local council.
“The second meeting impressively demonstrated which issues matter to children in Kastel and how valuable their perspectives are for the development of a child-friendly neighborhood,” concluded Dr. Patricia Becher, Head of Social Affairs.
The Children’s Parliament will also participate with creative activities at the play street on Zehnthofstraße in Kastel on Friday, June 5, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All children are warmly invited to stop by, join in the fun, and get to know the Children’s Parliament.
