Press release of the state capital Wiesbaden

City council once again supports "Wiesbaden on Ice" with a subsidy

On Tuesday, May 26, the city council of the state capital decided to grant a subsidy of 125,000 euros for the XXL ice rink "Wiesbaden on Ice" at the suggestion of Mayor Christiane Hinninger. The city council is to confirm this decision at its meeting on Thursday.

Mayor and Head of Economic Affairs Christiane Hinninger: “‘Wiesbaden on Ice’ is a fantastic project whose appeal puts our city on the map throughout Germany and even internationally. This positive, welcoming, family-friendly, and even slightly glamorous image goes far beyond the mere number of additional visitors it brings to the city. The event is an ideal complement to the Sternschnuppenmarkt and the Kindersternschnuppenmarkt on Luisenplatz. The grant is money well spent, as the ice rink is a real economic driver for retail and the restaurant industry.”

The subsidy is financed by casino funds. This year, it is 50,000 euros lower than last year. The reason for the reduced need is improved organization of the event during setup and operation.

The XXL ice rink on the Bowling Green in front of the Kurhaus has been in operation since 2023. Since 2025, the event has been organized by the non-profit Icemotion gGmbH. Should the company generate a profit, it is returned to the state capital.

This year, “Wiesbaden on Ice” kicks off on Friday, November 27, the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent. Regular operations will run through Sunday, January 3, 2027. On Monday, January 4, there will be a family day to wrap up the event.

New this year is that the times during which children and teenagers can skate for free have been extended. In addition, there will be a “happy hour” for children and teenagers with reduced admission.
