“Christian Dell – From the Silver Pitcher to Goldgasse”: Closing Event with a Curator-Led Tour

On Sunday, November 15, the special exhibition “Christian Dell – From the Silver Jug to Goldgasse” will come to a close at the Stadtmuseum am Markt (sam). To mark the occasion, the Stadtmuseum is hosting a free guided tour followed by a champagne reception.

From the Bauhaus workshop to Wiesbaden’s Goldgasse: The special exhibition “Christian Dell – From the Silver Jug to Goldgasse” at the City Museum traces the life of one of modernism’s most influential designers. Sunday, November 15, marks the exhibition’s final day. To mark the closing, the City Museum invites visitors to a guided tour with curator Dr. Vera Klewitz from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Afterward, guests can wrap up the exhibition together over a glass of sparkling wine from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Admission to the special exhibition is free on this day.

Dell (1893–1974) is best known for his lamps from the “Kaiser Idell” series, which are still considered design classics today. But his body of work extends far beyond that. As a silversmith, workshop master at the State Bauhaus in Weimar, and later head of the metalworking department at the Frankfurt am Main Art School, he explored new forms, materials, and the possibilities of industrial production. The exhibition showcases this diversity through silverwork, plastic designs, ceramics, and lamps. At the same time, it sheds light on a lesser-known chapter of his life: Dell spent the second half of his life in Wiesbaden and, after World War II, opened the shop “Geräte / Kunst / Schmuck” on Goldgasse.

During the concluding guided tour, visitors will have another opportunity to learn more about Dell’s life and his creative ideas. The exhibition thus connects international design history with the history of Wiesbaden and offers a new perspective on a designer whose work continues to shape our everyday lives to this day.
