Topping-Out Ceremony at the Rheinhöhe Sports Park: Swimming, Ice Sports, and Recreation Under One Roof
Construction of the Rheinhöhe Sports Park is moving forward: The state capital of Wiesbaden, the municipal swimming pool operator mattiaqua, and SEG Stadtentwicklungsgesellschaft Wiesbaden mbH celebrated the topping-out ceremony with the construction and trades companies on Tuesday, October 20.
Once the buildings are completed and a commissioning phase is finished, the Rheinhöhe Sports Park is scheduled to open its doors by the end of 2028. The total cost of the project remains within the previously planned budget of 153 million euros net.
Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende says: “The topping-out ceremony shows what the people of Wiesbaden can look forward to: a sports park that creates space for exercise, socializing, and recreation. Here, we are investing in the quality of life in our city and in facilities that will benefit schools, clubs, and families in the long term. For the state capital of Wiesbaden, swimming pools are part of essential public services, which is why we need a replacement for the existing recreational pool on Mainzer Straße. Our goal is for all children to learn to swim, for families and athletes to have access to a modern pool, and to create another attractive sports facility with a covered ice rink.”
Mayor and Head of Urban Development Christiane Hinninger says: “The Rheinhöhe Sports Park demonstrates how we want to continue developing Wiesbaden: with attractive public facilities and architecture that takes responsibility for the environment and the cityscape. The buildings will not only blend well into their surroundings. The entire concept of the sports park is sustainable—from the intelligent use of natural light and energy-efficient technology to the nature-oriented design of the outdoor facilities. This is becoming a place where sustainable construction and quality of life come together.”
Daniela Georgi, Head of the Sports Department, says: “The topping-out ceremony is a big day for sports in Wiesbaden. I am very pleased with the progress of the construction and look forward to seeing a modern facility take shape here that brings so many different sports activities together under one roof. Whether it’s swimming, ice sports, or other recreational activities—the Rheinhöhe Sports Park will strengthen the diversity of sports in Wiesbaden as well as its reputation as a sports city and create new opportunities for clubs, schools, and recreational athletes. With the Rheinhöhe Sports Park, we are creating an important venue for physical activity, social interaction, and the future of sports in Wiesbaden.”
SEG Managing Director Prof. Dr. Ute Knippenberger says: “For SEG, which is responsible for the overall management of the construction project, the topping-out ceremony is a special moment. What has been planned and prepared over the years is now taking shape. This is a remarkable joint achievement by everyone involved. Our thanks go to the planning and construction firms that are driving this challenging project forward with their expertise and dedication.”
Thomas Baum, Operations Manager at mattiaqua, says: “We look forward to bringing this sports park to life. Whether it’s the first swimming class, club practice, time on the ice, or a visit to the sauna: this place will offer many opportunities to be active and have a good time together. For mattiaqua, this is an exciting new challenge.”
At Konrad-Adenauer-Ring, the recreational pool, the ice rink, and the sauna and wellness area will be brought together into a single complex. mattiaqua’s new headquarters will also be located here. In the future, the sports park will replace the Mainzer Straße recreational pool and the Henkell artificial ice rink. By bringing these facilities together, the location will take on new significance for the city’s sports and recreational life.
Among other features, the new recreational pool will offer a 50-meter swimming pool, a teaching pool with an adjustable floor, and a non-swimmer area. The ice rink is also intended to be used for roller sports outside the ice season. A shared foyer connects the different areas, allowing visitors to experience the diversity of the sports park as soon as they arrive. The multi-level architecture reflects the topography of the Rheinhöhe and integrates the new building into its surroundings. A wooden structural framework, photovoltaic panels, and green roofs combine urban development with the principles of sustainable construction.
