City maps, aerial photos, and historical maps are now freely available
It’s now even easier to explore Wiesbaden: The state capital is making a wide range of geospatial data available to the public for free on its open data platform, effective immediately. This new service allows users to access current city maps and aerial photographs, as well as historical maps and plans. The data can not only be viewed but also used for personal projects and applications.
The data is provided by the Geoinformation Division of the City Surveying Department within the Civil Engineering and Surveying Office and is available via the open data platform at opendata.cloud.wiesbaden.de (opens in a new tab). This makes the geodata available to anyone interested—from citizens and businesses to researchers, schools, and educational institutions.
“Geodata makes our city visible—both in the present and throughout its historical development. By making this data openly available, we’re laying a solid foundation so that citizens, academia, business, and government can use this information for their own ideas, applications, and analyses. We intend to continue down this path and gradually expand the range of open geodata from Wiesbaden,” says Marc Dahlen, Head of the Department of Legal Affairs and Mobility.
The data becomes particularly fascinating when old and new maps are compared. What was the route of a street in the past? Where have new neighborhoods emerged? How has development changed in a specific area? The historical maps reveal Wiesbaden’s development and offer a glimpse of the city across different eras.
The data provided can be used for a wide variety of purposes. For example, it can serve as the basis for your own maps and digital applications, be used for spatial analyses or scientific research, or simply help you better understand the history and development of Wiesbaden.
The geospatial data is available via the Open Data Platform of the State Capital of Wiesbaden and can be accessed directly there. Use is permitted under the Germany Data License – Attribution – Version 2.0 (DL-DE BY 2.0). The following copyright notice must be included when using the data: © City of Wiesbaden, Civil Engineering and Surveying Office, dl-de/by-2-0.
Further information on the individual datasets and their use can be found directly on the platform. The launch of this new service does not mark the end of the development process. The Geoinformation Division of the City Surveying Office plans to gradually expand the platform with additional suitable geodata. The goal is to make information about Wiesbaden even more easily accessible and to enable its use for as many different ideas and applications as possible.
