A643 Closure: City Responds to Significant Traffic Congestion

The short-term closure of the A643 in the direction of Frankfurt between the Schierstein Rhine Bridge and the Schierstein interchange on Wednesday, September 23, is currently causing significant traffic disruptions. The closure is due to damage to the temporary bridge. The Federal Motorway Corporation (Autobahn GmbH des Bundes) is responsible for the closure and for repairing the damage. The state capital of Wiesbaden can therefore only respond to the situation within the scope of its own jurisdiction.

Marc Dahlen, head of the Transportation Department, has assembled a large team comprising representatives from the Department of Motor Vehicles, the police, and department experts to minimize the impact on the Wiesbaden metropolitan area as quickly as possible and manage traffic.

Biebrich is currently particularly affected: Traffic coming from Mainz is being diverted at the Wiesbaden-Äppelallee interchange, thereby placing a significant strain on the already heavily trafficked streets in the district. The city is working around the clock to ensure that the traffic problems do not spread further into the city center.

To ease the upcoming rush-hour traffic, the city police are currently diverting traffic at the two intersections—Tannhäuserstraße and Herzogsplatz—onto the A66 highway toward Frankfurt and the Rheingau, respectively.

It is currently not possible to cross the Rhine Bridge toward downtown Wiesbaden. A wide-area detour via the Mainzer Ring is currently being prepared.

It is not yet known how long the closure will last. No reliable information is currently available from Autobahn GmbH.

The city asks all road users to avoid the area as much as possible and—where possible—to switch to public transportation. In this way, each individual can help reduce the additional strain on Wiesbaden’s road network.

“Once again, it is the residents of Wiesbaden who are bearing the brunt of this necessary, last-minute closure. We cannot resolve the cause ourselves, but we are doing everything we can to minimize the impact on our city and restore traffic flow as quickly as possible,” says Dahlen.
