Press release of the state capital Wiesbaden

Archaeological excavations begin on the BKA construction site in Ostfeld

In Ostfeld, additional preparatory work for the planned relocation of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) will begin in September. Extensive archaeological excavations will commence in the southern portion of the construction site, located north of the A66 and west of Erbenheim. The work is being coordinated by Stadtentwicklungsgesellschaft Wiesbaden mbH (SEG), which serves as the development agency and trustee for the Ostfeld urban development project (SEM).

The archaeological investigations are being conducted by the Hessian State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments, Department of Hessian Archaeology. During the process, archaeological finds are carefully excavated, documented, and secured so that they can subsequently be scientifically analyzed. In this way, potential traces of the past are preserved for future generations. The work is expected to continue through 2029.

The archaeological excavations are being carried out in phases on areas that have already been cleared of unexploded ordnance. A central construction site facility area is being set up on the construction site for the work. At the same time, the necessary species protection measures are being implemented. Particular attention is being paid to the presence of the skylark and various reptile species. Experts in ecology and soil science are providing ongoing support for the work.

“I am pleased that the archaeological excavations on the future BKA construction site are being carried out by Hessenarchäologie in close and cooperative collaboration. This will allow the valuable artifacts from the past to be professionally documented and preserved. At the same time, we are laying the groundwork for the further development of the new BKA campus,” says Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende.

Hessenarchäologie is responsible in Hesse for the recording, preservation, and research of archaeological sites.
