Together with representatives from politics and government, as well as Helios HSK and EGW, the topping-out ceremony for the 168 company-owned apartments was celebrated. 

A total of ten buildings are being constructed with a total living area of approximately 12,500 square meters, built using a hybrid wood construction method. A wide range of housing types is planned—from one-bedroom apartments measuring 38 square meters to six-bedroom apartments measuring 131 square meters, which are also suitable for shared living arrangements. Heating will be provided via district heating; the roofs will be greened and equipped with photovoltaic systems. All apartments will also feature balconies, radiant floor heating, and a ventilation system. In addition, green open spaces, a neighborhood plaza, and a children’s playground are being created. 

The 168 apartments themselves are designed as company housing for employees of the Helios Dr. Horst Schmidt Clinics in Wiesbaden. Thomas Keller, managing director of GWW, explained: “With the HSK company housing, we are addressing two current challenges at once: the shortage of affordable housing and the shortage of skilled workers in the medical field. I am very pleased that the project is progressing so well and that, almost exactly one year after the groundbreaking ceremony, we can now celebrate the topping-out ceremony. And completion is scheduled for next September.” 

Andreas Kowol, the new Chair of GWW’s Supervisory Board and also the city’s Commissioner for Social Affairs and Health, stated: “The HSK is a central pillar of healthcare in Wiesbaden. However, good healthcare also depends on the conditions under which the people who ensure it every day are able to work. This is precisely where health and social policy go hand in hand: this includes short commutes, affordable housing, and child care that accommodates shift work and early start times. The fact that we are therefore combining the new company housing with on-site daycare is a very concrete step toward easing the burden on families and creating good working conditions for healthcare workers.” 

Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende emphasized in his speech: “This project sends a strong message. The focus of the new construction of company housing at the HSK is on creating affordable housing. Anyone who works at one of the most modern hospitals should also be able to find good, financially affordable housing. Many people will find a new and affordable home here. Affordable housing is hard to come by in Wiesbaden, which is why this construction project is of particular importance for employees and for Wiesbaden as a healthcare hub.” 

Angela Tausendpfund, Executive Director of EGW (ein gesundes Wiesbaden), added: “I am very pleased that, through this initiative in collaboration with Helios, GWW, EGW, and the State Capital of Wiesbaden, we have been able to realize a strategically important project for Wiesbaden as a healthcare hub. Attractive housing and the availability of on-site child care create ideal conditions for attracting healthcare professionals to Wiesbaden and retaining them in the long term—all while combining living, working, and child care in one place.” 

Thorsten Sleifir was on site as a representative of HSK’s management and explained: “The new company-owned apartments are far more than just living space. We are thereby creating an attractive offering for our employees and supporting the recruitment of new professionals. The proximity of living and working enhances the appeal of Helios HSK Wiesbaden and, consequently, healthcare provision in the region. Overall, a modern, cross-organizational healthcare campus is taking shape here that is unparalleled in this form.” 

In total, GWW is investing approximately 50 million euros in the HSK company housing units.
