City Museum: Guided Tour of the Special Exhibition “Christian Dell – From the Silver Pitcher to Goldgasse”

Christian Dell’s life is closely intertwined with the history of 20th-century design. Who was he, and what connects him to Wiesbaden? Answers to these questions will be provided during a public guided tour of the special exhibition “Christian Dell—From the Silver Pitcher to Goldgasse,” hosted by the Stadtmuseum am Markt on Sunday, September 13, at 11:30 a.m.

The tour traces key milestones in his life and work: from Dell’s early days as a silversmith, through his tenure as a workshop master at the State Bauhaus in Weimar, to his famous lamp designs in the “Kaiser Idell” series. Special attention is given to his long-overlooked connection to Wiesbaden. After World War II, Dell lived in the city and ran a shop for design, art, and jewelry on Goldgasse.

Selected exhibits illustrate how Dell combined artisanal precision with functional design and the use of new materials. At the same time, the tour offers insights into the development of his design language and the versatility of his creative work. Featuring numerous national and international loans, the exhibition highlights the work of a designer whose creations continue to have a profound influence today, while also focusing on a previously little-known chapter of his life in Wiesbaden.

The public tour lasts about one hour. The cost is 6 euros, or 4 euros for reduced-rate admission, plus a 4-euro tour fee. Registration is not required, but the number of participants is limited.
