Thea Mengeler reads from “Public Transit”
Thea Mengeler’s new novel was announced as the “Book of the Hour,” and she will be presenting it on Tuesday, September 29, at an author reading at the Literaturhaus Villa Clementine, located at Frankfurter Straße 1.
It tells the story of a young woman named Judith who experiences sexual violence online and, in an effort to make sense of what has happened, seeks refuge in the anonymity of buses and trains. The reading from “Öffentlicher Nahverkehr” begins at 7:30 p.m., and freelance critic Shirin Sojitrawalla (DLF and taz) will host the evening. The event is organized by the Literaturhaus Villa Clementine/Wiesbaden Cultural Office as part of Leseland Hessen, with the kind support of the Hessian Ministry of Science and Research, Art and Culture, the Sparkassen Cultural Foundation of Hesse-Thuringia, and hr2-kultur. Further information can be found at www.wiesbaden.de/literaturhaus.
“Öffentlicher Nahverkehr” follows a young influencer who suddenly finds herself in a nightmare when her ex-partner publishes intimate material online against her will. In a new city, she finds the peace she needs—of all places, on anonymous public transit—to sort out her thoughts and, at the same time, let her anger boil over. Mengeler crafts a scenario that resonates with many women, thereby opening up a literary discourse on deepfakes, cyberstalking, and AI.
Tickets are available in advance for 12 euros, reduced price 9 euros, plus a booking fee, at the Wiesbaden Tourist Information Office, Marktplatz 1, phone (0611) 1729930; online via the Literaturhaus website. At the box office on site, admission costs 15 euros, or 11 euros with a discount.
