Video Surveillance in Wiesbaden Is Being Expanded

Joint press release from the West Hesse Police Headquarters and the state capital of Wiesbaden.

The state capital of Wiesbaden and the West Hesse Police Headquarters are further expanding their joint security efforts. In the area around Luisenplatz, three mobile video surveillance trailers will initially be deployed on a temporary basis. This will expand the coverage of video surveillance in Wiesbaden and add another component to the existing security infrastructure.

On Wednesday, September 30, representatives of the state capital of Wiesbaden and the West Hesse Police Headquarters presented the three video surveillance trailers at a joint press conference on Luisenplatz and explained the rationale behind the measure.

The decision to deploy the mobile video surveillance trailers is based, among other things, on police findings regarding trends in crime in public spaces around Luisenplatz. Since 2023, at least 68 crimes have been recorded there annually. After a total of 68 crimes were recorded in 2024, the number rose to 73 cases in 2025. Assault-related offenses accounted for a significant portion of these. Of the 73 crimes recorded at Luisenplatz in 2025, 36 fell into this category.

“We respond wherever the police situation and local conditions indicate a need for action. Video surveillance is not an isolated tool, but rather part of our joint security efforts with the state capital of Wiesbaden. The mobile units also give us the flexibility to respond to local developments,” says Police Chief Björn Gutzeit.

The deployment of the mobile video surveillance trailers is part of the joint security efforts between the city and the police. These include, among other things, the 10-point plan, the “Safe Wiesbaden” initiative, and joint visibility, enforcement, and prevention measures. The goal is to combine various tools and continuously adapt the measures to the current security situation. In addition to police and city presence, targeted checks, and prevention programs, video surveillance is also an integral part of this approach.

“Luisenplatz is a central location in our downtown area and is used by many people every day. It is important to us that citizens can move about here safely and feel comfortable. The mobile video surveillance trailers complement the existing measures implemented by the city and the police and enable us to respond flexibly to the current security situation. The key here is the interplay of a visible police presence, prevention, and modern technical support. Close cooperation with the West Hesse Police Headquarters is of great importance in this regard,” says Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende.

As early as 2025, a mobile video surveillance trailer was in use at Luisenplatz on a temporary basis. The current expansion builds on those experiences. With three mobile trailers, the area can be covered more comprehensively in the future, while also allowing for a flexible response to local conditions.

“We want Luisenplatz to remain a place where people enjoy spending time and feel safe. Drug dealing and open drug use must not define the image of one of our city’s central squares. With the mobile video surveillance systems, we are adding another tool to our arsenal of presence, checks, and prevention. Safety requires visibility, attention, and consistent action,” explains Daniela Georgi, Commissioner for Economy, Sports, and Public Order.

The visible use of video surveillance is intended to help prevent crimes and increase the risk of detection. At the same time, recorded footage can be used, within the framework of legal requirements, to investigate crimes and preserve evidence.

The mobile video surveillance trailers make it possible to respond flexibly—and initially for a limited time—to the local security situation. Their deployment in the Luisenplatz area complements the existing measures taken by the police and the city.

“For us, it is crucial that video surveillance does not stand alone, but is closely integrated with a police presence and targeted checks. The mobile video surveillance trailers give us additional opportunities to respond flexibly to the situation on the ground and to support our police work both preventively and in the investigation of crimes,” explains Alexander Jaza, Chief of the Wiesbaden Police Department.

Among those attending the presentation were Police President Gutzeit, the head of the Wiesbaden Police Department, Jaza, and the head of the 1st Police Precinct, Thomas Wichter. Representing the state capital of Wiesbaden were Mayor Mende and Public Order Commissioner Georgi.

The police and the City of Wiesbaden are thus consistently continuing their joint security efforts and further developing existing measures in response to the current situation.

In closing, Gutzeit emphasized: “Security is a shared responsibility. The police, local government, and other partners must work closely together to achieve this. Video surveillance is an important component of a comprehensive package of measures. The key lies in the interplay of a visible police presence, prevention, consistent police action, and technical support. I would like to thank the state capital of Wiesbaden for its excellent and close cooperation.”
