Press release of the state capital Wiesbaden

Lecture at City Hall: “From Independence to a Suburb of a Major City”

One hundred years ago, on October 1, 1926, Biebrich, Schierstein, and Sonnenberg became part of Wiesbaden. To mark the anniversary, historian Dr. Thomas Weichel will speak on Friday, October 2, at 6 p.m. in the ballroom of City Hall, Schlossplatz 6, on the topic “From Independence to a Suburb of a Major City—Wiesbaden’s Incorporations, 1926–1977.” Admission is free.

Wiesbaden grew in three major phases: 1926, 1928, and 1977. Each phase had a different impetus, and each time, various interests clashed. The state—first Prussia, later Hesse—wanted efficient administrations. The city wanted land and tax revenue, but not costly burdens. The municipalities needed money for schools, roads, and sewers, yet wanted to remain in control of their own affairs. Rarely was everyone satisfied. The lecture explores what became of those hopes and promises and what became of the towns’ own identities—right up to today’s local advisory councils. It accompanies the exhibition on the incorporations at City Hall, which Weichel curated.
