Epochs of the city's history
Middle Ages
The oldest written reference to medieval Wiesbaden, "wisibada", can be found in a report by Charlemagne's biographer from the 9th century.
During this time, Wiesbaden belonged to the special royal district. At the end of the 12th century, the Counts of Nassau acquired individual property rights in the Wiesbaden area and in 1296 King Adolf I of Nassau founded the Klarenthal Monastery.
