In order to transfer a vehicle abroad, so-called export license plates are required.
In the case of a previously registered vehicle, the license plates will be cancelled and the registration certificate part I will be withdrawn. As a rule, export license plates are issued for a maximum of one month.
The registration authority responsible for the applicant's main place of residence issues the export license plates.
In the case of applicants residing abroad, the registration authority in whose area the authorized recipient has his main residence is responsible.
If the authorized recipient's place of residence is within the jurisdiction of the Wiesbaden registration authority, the authorized recipient does not have to be present. In this case, a signed power of attorney and the authorized recipient's ID or passport are sufficient. The original ID card or passport or a copy with an additional original signature can be presented.
Export license plates can only be issued to vehicles that are located on the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The vehicle must be presented to the vehicle registration authority for an identity check.

If the applicant is to be represented when registering their vehicle, a written power of attorney must be issued to the person representing them and a valid identity card or passport must be handed over for presentation. This power of attorney must also contain the applicant's consent that the registration authority may inform the authorized person of any outstanding fees and expenses. The representative must present the power of attorney and provide proof of identity.
