In recent years, more and more independent providers have been offering to process certificate orders for customers on their websites. This service is not part of the services provided by the registry office and incurs higher fees.

Civil status records contain personal data that is subject to data protection laws. However, information from civil status registers or the issuance of a civil status certificate may only be provided to the person to whom the entry relates, as well as their spouse, ascendants, and direct descendants. This is governed by Sections 61–66 of the Civil Status Act.

Siblings who are at least 16 years of age may obtain birth and death certificates provided they can demonstrate a legitimate interest. Third parties may obtain a certificate only with a power of attorney and a copy of the principal’s identification.
