Wiesbaden - for many, this is the "city of civil servants" - outdated, well-behaved, a place without much of a spirit of optimism. But in the Westend of the 1960s, a completely different microcosm emerged: the "Bumerang".
Founded by the family and run by the charismatic Sylvi, it quickly became a place that was far more than just a pub. People sat here under thick clouds of smoke, drank beer and schnapps, discussed politics, listened to rock'n'roll or the Wurlitzer. For many, it was their "living room" - a place where you could always meet someone, even without an appointment.
The Bumerang became a meeting place for free spirits, lateral thinkers, students, footballers and neighbors. Political movements such as the '68 movement or the disputes over Runway West had their resonance here. Personal stories, friendships and love stories began at the bar.
At the same time, the pub also reflected the fractures in society: war children, the longing for a new beginning, the left-wing scene, RAF shadows, pub teams, discussions between generations. All of this culminated in a place where the private and the political were inextricably linked.
The documentary, funded by HessenFilm und Medien, Fonds Soziokultur and supported by regional cultural partners, is not only a tribute to Sylvi and the Bumerang, but also a piece of Wiesbaden's contemporary history. It tells the story of a place that became home to many - and what it means when such places disappear.
"Bumerang - A pub and its city" is a declaration of love, a memoir and a cultural and historical document all in one. Feel free to leave your own personal memories or stories about the Bumerang in the YouTube comments!
