A city museum plays a major role in creating the historical and cultural identity of a community. The Friends' Association takes on ideas and projects that the sam - Stadtmuseum am Markt cannot implement itself in addition to the day-to-day running of the museum. It finds sponsors and thus supports the purchase of exhibits.
City museum in the former historic market cellar - in a provincial capital!
The vault seemed an acceptable alternative for a transitional period. However, the location means restrictions for every exhibition: no space for large exhibits, no antique documents due to high humidity and too little space for the "treasures" stored in the depots. The aim of the Förderverein Stadtmuseum is to find an adequate, suitable building, whether a new or old building, for the history of Wiesbaden and Hesse. A building to present the history, but above all a meeting place and a forum to deal with questions of the present and future based on local history.
Our motto: "From the cellar into the light"
Since 2016, the sam - Stadtmuseum am Markt has been located in the historic market cellar on the Dern'schen site in the center of the Hessian state capital of Wiesbaden and invites visitors on a journey through the millennia.
The sam - Stadtmuseum am Markt displays multifaceted sections of the Nassau Antiquities Collection (SNA): As the most important archaeological and historical collection in Hesse, it is one of the most important in Germany and is of international standing with around 350,000 objects from the fields of archaeology, graphics, decorative arts, militaria and numismatics, among others. The permanent exhibition shows the history of the city from the Ice Age to the recent past.
In addition, the sam - Stadtmuseum am Markt presents changing special exhibitions on topics ranging from ancient to contemporary cultural history.
