Favorite piece of the month October
Every month, visitors to the "sam - Stadtmuseum am Markt" choose their favorite item from the collections at a multimedia station. In October, the choice fell on a snuff bottle.
Snuff bottle
This bottle came into the collection as a purchase from an auction house. There is a spoon made of bone in the lid for removing the tobacco.
Snuff has been known in Europe since around the 17th century. The tobacco is finely ground and is consumed slowly through the nose.
Glass containers for storing tobacco were particularly popular in Bavaria and China. Cigarettes and inexpensive stoneware bottles largely replaced glass snuff bottles after the First World War. Since the late 19th century, however, they have been highly valued as collector's items. As a result, they have been produced again since 1960 - from everyday objects to works of art.
