Favorite piece February
Every month, visitors to the "sam - Stadtmuseum am Markt" choose their favorite piece from the collections at a multimedia station. In February 2026, the choice fell on the statuette of a dog.
Dog
This small sculpture was made in the workshop of Swiss sculptor Johann Jakob Höppli in Wiesbaden. Höppli came to Wiesbaden in 1846 and founded his own workshop a few years later. He died in 1876. The production facility remained in operation until 1945.
Many well-known buildings in Wiesbaden, such as the Marktkirche and Villa Clementine, are decorated with works from Höppli's workshop.
The statuette of the St. Bernard is made of yellow clay. As a small sculpture, it was used either as a model for a larger sculpture or as an ornament.
The dog was part of a donation made by Helma Höppli about six months before she died in 2022.
