Chess is the most popular board game in Europe. Its predecessor probably originated in northern India. Chess has also been known in Europe since the 13th century and was one of the games a knight had to master.

In the 19th century, this chessboard was designed in the Duchy of Nassau with pictures in place of the dark squares. They show views of Nassau towns and were therefore not only interesting for game lovers, but also as a souvenir.
