Handbags for women have been around since the 19th century. Bags made of metal links first appeared in the early 18th century. These were handmade and often consisted of previously used parts, such as the snap closure from a purse. Machine production of these handbags became possible in 1908, making them affordable for women. 

This example dates from around 1900. It could be carried by hand or slung over the arm.
